Betty Jo Phelps Moon was born in Houston, Texas. She is the fourth child in a family of ten children. She received her education from Francis Harper Elementary and Junior High School, Booker T. Washington High School, HoustonCommunity College and College of Biblical Studies.
Betty joined the family of God at the young age of nine years old. She was baptized at DamascusMissionaryBaptistChurch by the late Reverend J.D. Taylor. She remained a member there until 1975.
In 1975, Betty married Henry Moon and united with the Pentecostal Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Rev. William H. Burks. She continues her spiritual growth under the leadership of Rev. Acie J. Jefferson Jr. at Pentecostal, where she is a Sunday School Teacher, Counselor, Hospitality member, Vacation Bible School Closing Program Director, Drama Ministry Director, Director of the Church Praise Dancers, a member of the Mission I and Mission Chorus. A few of Betty’s personal ministries are: sending “Thinking of You” cards, calling the sick and visiting nursing homes. One of her favorite scriptures is II Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”  She believes that you can not know Jesus and not change.
Family is very important to Betty. She demonstrates her love and support to those she love by giving her time, sage advice and sharing the word of God at every opportunity. She is very proud of her children – Robert Wilson (Deceased), Ronald Wilson, Rosalyn Wilson and Eric Wilson. The person who has made the greatest impact in her life, who was her role model, was her mother, Mattie Phelps Thomas.
In 2004, Betty retired from ExxonMobil after 25 years of dedicated service. Twenty-three of those years were in a leadership capacity. She remains in close contact with former co-workers who often credit her with being instrumental in their spiritual growth.
A tidbit of advice from Betty is, “If you realize you are not as close to God as you use to be, guess who moved?”
Congratulations to Alpha Award Winner, Betty Moon!
